One of the main natural attractions that San Juan de Oriente has is the Laguna de Apoyo Natural Reserve, declared a protected area in 1991 by the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources MARENA. This reserve includes, in addition to San Juan de Oriente, the municipalities of Catarina, I would say Granada.

In the ecosystem, productive plots with trees of citrus, banana, calala, mango, avocado and others that are mixed with native trees prevail.

The fauna is dominated mainly by forest birds such as guardabarrancos, tanagers, trogons, warblers and honeycombs, although you can also find medium-sized mammals such as howler monkeys, sloths and guatusas that take advantage of the productive diversification in the farms for their food.

The native flora is dominated by species with a large tree canopy such as the chilamate and the guanacaste, used as shade in the crops and that easily impress any visitor due to their centuries-old sizes. Another predominant species in this place is the cedar.

Although San Juan de Oriente does not have nature conservation areas, it is an area of great importance as a biological corridor between the Laguna de Apoyo Natural Reserve and the Mombacho Volcano.

This municipality has a municipal arboretum dedicated to the conservation of the main species in the area, it is located 800 meters south of the municipal cemetery, north side of the Enacal well.
