The Peñas Blancas massif is a set of hills that rise about 1,750 meters above sea level, which are part of the so-called "Isabelia mountain range", an alignment of peaks that serves as a dividing line between the tributaries of the rivers Bocay and Coco and the tributaries of the Tuma River. It was declared a protected area by Decree 42-91, published in the official newspaper La Gaceta No. 207 on October 31, 1991. Its name is named for the white color of a moss that grows on the rocky cliffs that stand out in the East side of the Massif.
