Salto de Busay Bridge

El Tortuguero, a municipality located within one of the largest hydrographic basins in the Nicaraguan Caribbean, that of the Kurinwás River, with multiple tributaries that allow communication with the rest of the territory. While navigating its rivers and enjoying an incomparable natural setting until reaching a rural town of simple, hard-working and friendly people.

The municipality is located 530 kilometers from Managua, capital of Nicaragua. It limits to the north with La Cruz de Río Grande, to the south with El Rama and Kukra Hill, to the east Laguna de Perlas and Río Grande mouth and to the west with El Rama, El Ayote and Paiwas.

The main productive activity is small-scale farming. Agriculture with the cultivation of basic grains, roots, tubers and musaceae are mainly intended for self-consumption, commercialization of perishable products, cattle and pigs and the production of dairy products.

If you travel from Managua, at the Mercado El Mayoreo terminal you take a bus to El Rama.

If you travel by private vehicle from Managua you take the North Pan-American Highway, at the San Benito junction you must turn right and follow the road to El Rama.

Animal husbandry

At El Rama you board a boat to Bluefields. At the Bluefields dock, you take a boat that goes to El Tortuguero through the Kukra River, the Sonie, Perlas and Big Lagoon lagoons, and then sail on the Kurinwás and Karawala rivers. This tour lasts approximately 4 to 5 hours.

Another option for you to have a direct trip without worrying about finding boats that can take you, is to go to the Iván Montenegro Market and at the bus terminal that travels to the Caribbean Coast, buy a ticket for the cost of the entire trip to El RAMA, or take the bus from Mercado El Mayoreo and reach the community of Wapi, followed by bus to the Marron that leads to Tortuguero.

In the municipality, transportation consists of pangas, cayucos and beasts, all of them privately owned or owned by the institutions present there.

You can get to El Tortuguero through the all-weather trail from El Rama to El Tortuguero. In El Rama you board a taxi to the La Esperanza port, then you travel to Wapy, from Wapy you board a transport unit to the El Marrón community and from El Marrón to the municipal seat of El Tortuguero. This trip has an approximate cost of C$350.

Eventually commercial transport arrives, when there is enough demand in the regional head to make the trip profitable, so it is not unusual that for many days there is no possibility of traveling outside the municipality.
