The name of Yalagüina originates from the Chorotega language, and means town of the heights or of the mountains, from the words «Yale» or «Yare» which means mountain, summit or height, and from the voice «Guiña».
Born as a town in 1725, it is the only one that has a royal title with a transcription of ejido lands.
Yalaguina, town of religious and hardworking people, where their main dedication is artisan and agricultural work. This municipality is surrounded by the greenery of its unexplored nature, which is waiting to be discovered. Yalagüina is the birthplace of Colonel Santos López, a member of the Defense Army of National Sovereignty.
It is located 206 kilometers from the city of Managua. It limits to the north with Totogalpa, to the south with Pueblo Nuevo, to the east with Palacagüina and to the west with Somoto.
The fundamental economic activities of the municipality are agriculture, the making of donuts and the production of bricks.

How to reach?
To get to the municipality of Yalagüina you have to board a bus at the terminal of Mercado El Mayoreo, in Managua heading to Somoto or Ocotal, as the municipality is on the Pan-American Highway you must ask the driver to get you off at the entrance of the town, the which is visible by a colorful arch that shows two huge Indians honoring the indigenous people of the area.
By private vehicle you can take the North Pan-American Highway, in Sébaco take the highway to Estelí passing through La Trinidad, Estelí, Condega until you reach Yalagüina. The entrance to the town is very visible.
