Saint Peter the Apostle Cathedral

Saint Peter the Apostle Cathedral: a grandiose temple of distinguished aesthetics and authenticity, the largest in the north of the country. It is dedicated to the Virgin of La Merced and was built between 1874 and 1895.

It is a rectangular basilica-type building, in an eclectic style, in which baroque and neoclassical elements were added. Spatially it forms a Latin cross with its three naves and two side chapels.

The naves were separated by cross-shaped pillars, forming arches without angles, it was declared Historical and Cultural Heritage of the Nation in 2007.

San José Church: it is relevant in the architecture and history of the city. Formerly called the Church of Laborío or Dolores, in 1881 it served as a barracks for the rebellious Indians. It is an elegant construction with a colonial facade to which a bell tower with a clock was added.

Molagüina Church: formerly known as Iglesia San Felipe, it is one of the oldest churches, it was built between 1751 and 1873. It has in its main altar one of the oldest crucifixes in Nicaragua, which was brought from Spain in 1630 and was once part of the missions.

Episcopal palace: It is an attractive building in a neo-classical style with its two floors. It currently serves as the headquarters of the Colegio San Luis and the Universidad Católica Juan Pablo II.

Municipal theater: elegant modern structure, inaugurated in November 2013. It meets the requirements for the staging of theatrical and musical events of the municipality, it has capacity for more than 600 people.

House of the Indigenous Community: Also called "The House of the Common", it serves as the central headquarters for the offices of the councils of elders and other leaders and administrative officials of the indigenous people. Provides temporary accommodation services to members belonging to the Matagalpa Indigenous Community.

Bartolomé Martínez House: It is a two-level colonial style house with a central patio, adobe and wood structure, with a tile roof.

It was the residence and place where the Nicaraguan politician Bartolomé Martínez, the only president in the history of Nicaragua of indigenous descent, died. Don Bartolo, as he was popularly known, served as vice president of the republic between 1921 and 1923, and later as president of the republic, between October 17, 1923 and January 01, 1925.

Morazán Park: occupies an area of ​​5,000 square meters, distributed in facilities for rest, and recreation. It has paths and benches surrounded by the greenery of bushes and shade trees.

It has a fast food kiosk dating from 1920 and the complete sculptures of the hero Francisco Morazán, surrounded by the flags of the Central American countries, as well as the Matagalpine founders of the Sandinista Front, Carlos Fonseca Amador and Tomas Borge Martínez.

Darío Park, Old Laborío Square: With a space of 5,400 square meters, it offers rest to passers-by on its concrete benches surrounded by red paths and fresh green areas. Two gazebos complete the facilities and their decoration. Recently a monumental sculpture of the Prince of Castilian Letters Rubén Darío was decorated. This park is located in front of the San José church.

Los Monos Municipal Park: it is equipped with modern children's games, as well as seats for rest and a mini zoo with well-defined green areas by paths, flower bushes and large trees. In this park the presence of an old steamroller, a cannon and three original pre-Hispanic sculptures that were brought from the Yasica River stands out.

La Merced Park: with a monumental sculpture of the Virgin of La Merced, patron saint of the city, in an environment set with a brick floor, benches and interior and peripheral lighting.

The Cross of Peace: It is a Christian work that was inaugurated in November 2014, with the presence of 60 bishops from Central America and Panama, in the context of the 90th anniversary of the creation of the Diocese of Matagalpa. It is a 33 meter high iron structure that was placed - 1,150 meters high - on the Apante hill, called Cerro de la Paz, by the visiting bishops.
