It is located in the central region, between the municipalities of Rio Blanco, Matiguas and Paiwas, in the department of Matagalpa. It was declared through Presidential Decree 42-91, published in the official newspaper La Gaceta No. 207 on November 4, 1991. With an area of ​​4,787 hectares, made up of a series of massifs, among which Cerro El Peñón can be mentioned. , Putnas, Loma Pelada and Loma Golondrina.

It presents vegetation of tropical humid forest and cloud forest, predominating species such as willow, oak, matapalo, tempisque, lizaquín, white sand, montero avocado, cinnamon avocado, mahogany and mountain medlar.

The vegetation present in the different altitudinal gradients allows the existence of bird species, adapted to different environmental conditions, which find food available in some plant species, mainly epiphytes. Among these birds are hummingbirds and honeysuckle, red limpet y green limpet. Seed dispersal is critical for species of the lauraceae family, which are the basis of the diet of bird species such as the quetzal  y bell bird.
