The Cerro Wawashang Nature Reserve is located in the autonomous region of the South Caribbean Coast; with an area of 856,729 hectares extending between the municipalities of Laguna de Perlas, El Tortuguero and Kukra Hill.

It was declared a protected area through Decree 42-91, published in the official newspaper La Gaceta, November 4, 1991. It is an area of great hydrological importance since it is crossed by numerous rivers that are surrounded by forests and is also adjacent to two lagoons : Laguna de Perlas and Laguna Sunie, both are bordered by mangroves that protect numerous species of birds and commercial fish. The rivers that cross the reserve are freshwater, while the lagoons are saltwater.

Wawashang is a community that contains some of the last fragments of the great Nicaraguan Atlantic rainforest; that groups the evergreen equatorial forest of the lowlands and the rain forest that receives more than 2,000 mm of annual rainfall, which allows it to host a great variety of biodiversity.

Thus, the wildlife diversity of the reserve is made up of 26 species of reptiles, 14 amphibians; 161 species of birds, of which 26 are neo-tropical migratory and 135 are resident, some present threats to their conservation, however most are under protection. The number of bird species identified in the reserve represents 23,8% of the 676 bird species registered for the country.

Among the mammals there are 43 species, highlighting the presence of the largest species that require large wooded areas. Thus the jaguar, the puma, the tapir or tapir and possibly the anteater are present in the forest, there are also other species of mammals such as monkeys and bats. It can be said that there are quite a few species of mammals in the reserve, since they represent 25% of the 176 species of mammals that are registered for the country.
