The name "La Conquista" arises in reference to the first combat between the indigenous inhabitants of Nicaraguan territory with the first Spaniards, under the command of Gil González. Many indigenous people died in this combat, but the invaders withdrew with only one wounded, facing the impossibility of facing the numerous local people.

For a long time the territory was a valley of the municipality of Santa Teresa, but on October 4, 1899, it was elevated to a municipality.
