Traditional typical hammocks

Traditional typical hammocks

The population of the municipality descends from the Chorotega tribe who, in the days of our primitive natives, inhabited this region.

The first settlers who settled in the municipality did so in search of a safe and comfortable place, since they were fleeing the eruption of the Masaya Volcano.

Nandasmo has a high cultural heritage potential. It preserves a great pre-Hispanic historical legacy such as archaeological sites and rock art sites, as well as its cultural wealth that has been built over time.

Among the latests Moravia's compositions artisan demonstrations there are the pottery, leather and wood and wicker furniture workshops. The traditional workshops, located in the urban area, stand out and attest to the heritage of manufacturing and the artisan production technique inherited from the Chorotega indigenous people and passed down from generation to generation.

Nandasmo was declared a municipality in 1976. By 1980 it was the first territory to be declared free of illiteracy at the national level during the National Literacy Crusade.

Crafts

Nandasmo is the cradle of sculptors who with the skill of their hands carve and shape the wood creating original pieces, for example, in the José Norori Mena sculpture workshop, You will admire their skill in making religious images or sculptures in wood, including virgins, saints, crucifixes, masks, nativity scenes, sacrament and angels in various sizes.

It is located from the Church of God one block south. His mother Saba Mena inherited this profession of being carvers of popular imagery from her children Ingrid and José, who produced a masterpiece.

Among them, the following stand out: Craft workshop in jícara, This one, which is the fruit of the jícaro tree, is decorated with pre-Hispanic designs for utilitarian use, such as jicaritas (traditional glass), guacales (deep dish), typical spoons and ladles.

The process for making these products is to extract the pulp from the body of the fruit and after cleaning it well, they dry it to make their products. This workshop is located from San Pedro Parish one block south.

Álvaro López Áreas workshop: here they make miniature handicrafts (key rings, wooden fruits, cups, jugs, animals, turtles, badges, barrels and the well-known “vulgar doll”, as well as costume jewelery -necklaces, earrings and rings-) vintage car designs.
