The ancient autochthonous inhabitants of Dolores were intimately connected with the Chorotegas-Dirianes, of Diriamba and Jinotepe, they corresponded to the same ethnic group and spoke the “Mangue” language. These indigenous people developed independently until the XNUMXth century, when the Nicaraguans settled in Rivas and influenced them culturally and linguistically.
At the beginning of the XNUMXth century, Dolores was made up of straw houses and a single street that reached Jinotepe, with lighting from locks of ocote and water that was obtained from the slopes, including the "Las Lajas" well.
At the end of the XNUMXth century, this municipality was part of the Pacific Railroad route, which connected Granada with Masaya, Carazo, Managua and western Nicaragua, which helped to promote development along with the arrival of migrants who began the cultivation of coffee.
The residents of Dolores are popularly known by the nickname of "pizotes" because in the last century its inhabitants walked at sunset, in single file back (as do the pizotes), along the only access street to their town. Dolores was elevated to the category of town in 1904 and on October 14 of that year the first mayor's office was inaugurated.
