Quezalguaque is considered one of the oldest towns in the Maribios region as part of the old Cacicazgo de Subtiava. With its historical-cultural wealth, its beautiful landscapes and its charismatic and charming people will make your visit to the city of the quetzals unforgettable.
The Spanish arrived in Quezalguaque around 1526, a little late in relation to other towns, since the town was located outside the ancient indigenous road, lost between the forest and the forest of the place.
From its origins it has been characterized as a people of great faith and religious fervor. The religious traditions linked to the history of its church begin with the arrival in this town of the image of the Virgen de los Remedios. By 1610 the church was already recognized as a parish.
One of the oldest traditions of this town is the pilgrimage of this miraculous image. Every February 16 she is taken to the edge of the well where she was found, located about 120 meters from the sanctuary. Believers drink and carry water so that the Virgin may heal the sick. There are records that in 1820 the priest of the Sutiava parish organized a pilgrimage from Sutiava to the temple of the Virgin of the Remedies in Quezalguaque. The devotion and veneration to this image has its origin in Spain, in the fight against the Muslims.
Around the church, three important historical events in the religious life of this town stand out: The construction of the temple, which was by direct order from the Spanish crown, at the end of the 1750th century. The devotion to the Virgen de los Remedios dates back to the construction of the Sanctuary of Los Remedios in 1800-1865 and the declaration of the municipality of Quezalguaque in XNUMX.
In 2012, the National Assembly met in Quezalguaque in homage to the municipality's Patron Saint. This parliamentary activity was a special session to commemorate the 150th anniversary of having restored the name of the municipality to Quezalguaque by the former name of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios.

Don Fabio Centeno, the patriarch of carpentry, has been able to get ahead with his ingenuity and perseverance together with his collaborators, making furniture with precious wood such as wardrobes, hand-carved beds, if the client so wishes. Don Jose Benito Seville that works wonders with leather. He is one of the most popular saddlers in town. He is always surrounded by leather and sharp tools. He works on the huge wooden partition that he uses as a support for the elaboration of different decorative products or frames. Packs, shafts and simple mounts are his specialty. He also manufactures fine bibs, rumps and headboards with the support of two assistants and his wife.

Religiosity and orality
The legend of the apparition of the Virgen de los Remedios tells the tradition that a group of people who were heading from León to the Port of El Realejo carried the image of the Virgen de los Remedios. They decided to rest and spend the night near a well, the next day -already starting the road again-, they noticed that the image was not in the niche. Upon returning, they observed that the Virgin was near the well. This situation occurred three times, so the owners of the image decided to leave it in Quezalguaque.
