The municipality was inhabited by indigenous groups descended from the Chorotega culture who occupied the plains near the riverbanks, places where remains of archaeological materials and also petroglyphs are commonly found that record, through stone engraving, their experiences, thoughts and beliefs.

Craft trades

The production of charcoal in an artisanal way, the production of lime and the extraction of artisanal quarry stone stand out. Other traditional trades are cutting cane, cabinetmaking, and baking.

Rio Lodoso archaeological site. Here the petroglyphs located on both sides of the river stand out, showing more than 37 geometric, anthropomorphic, zoomorphic and abstract figures on the river platforms.

You can also visit another neighboring site such as Mango Solo or El Danto archaeological site, which can be accessed with guided tours of the site, where they show the variety of petroglyphs existing in the area, highlighting the Latin American Cross, carved in the walls of the river. Just five kilometers east of the municipality.

Tonantzi Museum

Accompanied by local guides you can visit both sites, rest on comfortable benches under the lush trees while listening to the story and taking pictures from the bridge that crosses the river.

Tonantzi Museum. In Nahuatl it means “Land that feeds us and gives us sustenance”. It is located in the House of Culture. It is a space that has two rooms: the first shows a historical overview of the first settlers of America, Nicaragua and the municipality; in the second, a collection of 102 archaeological pieces belonging to the Chorotega indigenous people who inhabited the place, as well as different tools such as grinding stones, axes, chisels, funeral urns, among others.

It also works in Villa El Carmen, the tiangue of the same name, and permanently the Fair Park, likewise this municipality celebrates the Turtle Festival in February.
