The word Estelí, for some historians, comes from the Mexican words "ix" which means "eye" and "telli" which means "flat, valley or field"; that is to say "Eye on the valley". 

Others have interpreted it as "River of blood", "River of obsidian", "Red water", "River of red jasper stones or Red veined".

The name of this municipality is Estelianos.

EsteliKnown as the “Diamond of the Segovias” due to its economic and commercial importance, it is home to a complex history of destruction and resurgence. It is the cradle of heroes and martyrs of the Sandinista Revolution, as well as many artists, artisans, musicians and intellectuals.

The municipality of Estelí is located 148 kilometers north of Managua, Capital Nicaragua. It limits the north with Cellar, south with The TrinitySan Nicolás y The Willow, to the east with San Sebastián de Yalí and La Concordia; and to the west with the municipalities of achuapa y  San Juan de Limay.

In the last 15 years, Estelí -after Managua- is the city that has grown the most economically, and it manifests itself not only in economic but also educational and cultural activity, it has 17 universities.

Coffee production

Tobacco has always been reflected in economic activity, 65 percent of Estelí's economy depends on it, almost 60 factories generate more than 30 thousand direct jobs in that city.

It is a more linked activity that goes from the cultivation, pre-industry and production of cigar, the latter located among the 25 best brands in the world, hence Estelí is also known as “The capital of tobacco”.

Commerce and other services, as well as small and medium artisan industries are equally important. The vast majority of companies in all economic sectors are micro, small and medium in size. Livestock, basic grains, potatoes and coffee are widely represented in this little piece of Nicaragua.

The municipality has access roads in excellent condition along the North Pan-American Highway from Managua. Likewise, it communicates by secondary roads with the territories of Jinotega, via La Concordia, Matagalpa via Sébaco and León via San Isidro and Telica.

To get to the municipality, you must board an ordinary or express public transport unit in Managua, bound for Estelí, Somoto, Ocotal or Jalapa, at the El Mayoreo Market bus terminal, with departure times every hour.

If you wish to travel by private vehicle, head along the Panamericana Norte Highway, at kilometer 105 in the municipality of Sébaco, turn left and follow the road to Estelí, passing through the San Isidro junction and the municipality of La Trinidad. Estelí is located at kilometer 148, the fresh breeze of the city will welcome you.
