La Libertad is a municipality with a centennial and rich gold tradition. It is the birthplace of illustrious figures in national history such as Commander Daniel Ortega Saavedra, Cardinal Miguel Obando y Bravo, and the hero Cornelio Silva Arguello.

Its relief is marked by the colossal figure of the Sierra de Amerrique, by the running of many waters and by a cool and welcoming climate.

La Libertad is located 170 kilometers from the capital and 34 kms. from the departmental capital, Juigalpa. It limits to the north with Camoapa, to the south with San Pedro de Lóvago, to the east with the municipalities of Santo Domingo and to the west with Juigalpa and San Francisco de Cuapa.

The economy of the municipality is strongly linked to mining activity. Livestock and agriculture have a notable impact along with commercial activity.

To get to this municipality from Managua, take a bus at the Mercado El Mayoreo terminal bound for Juigalpa. In the Central Market you look for a bus to La Libertad.

If you are traveling by private vehicle, take the north Pan-American highway northeast to the San Benito junction, turn southeast (right) along the El Rama highway until you reach the Juigalpa junction, where you must turn left and follow the road towards Liberty.
