Cocoa cultivation

The municipality of Matiguás, originally populated by indigenous peoples Ulua – Matagalpa, Misquito, Sumo and Mayagna. Evidence of the presence of indigenous groups in this territory is manifested through archaeological sites.

In other archaeological sites, several mounds have been discovered, which may signify housing constructions from pre-Hispanic times. According to the results of archaeological studies carried out in 2010, based on the analysis of the typology of ceramics and fragments found, they date from 500 AD to 1550 AD.

In the XNUMXth century, this municipality was repopulated with immigrants from different regions of the country and the department in search of land, giving rise to livestock, cocoa and coffee cultivation.

Due to its geographical location, it facilitates good communication for the commercialization of dairy products, as well as the establishment of milk collection and processing structures, which has led to the formation of the so-called Milk Basins around Matiguás.

The dairies, artisanal and semi-industrial cheese factories and the production of curds stand out, activities generally carried out by women.

You can also know the Gesta de Pancasán Historic Site, the graves of the guerrillas who died in combat: Silvio Mayorga, Rigoberto Cruz (known as Pablo Úbeda), Oscar Danilo Rosales, Carlos Reyna, Francisco Moreno and eight other guerrillas, who gave their lives for the freedom of our country, the August 27, 1967.

There is also a small museum where archaeological pieces and indigenous utensils are exhibited, which were found on a nearby farm.

The traditional and semi-industrial cheese factories, Those who make the curd are mostly women who are dedicated to this very traditional activity in the area.

In the municipality there is a cooperative that is dedicated to the transformation of Cocoa "La Campesina", a traditional chocolate factory where it is generally women who work on this transformation. You can visit them to learn about the process of making cocoa and enjoy a delicious cup of chocolate and other chocolate products.
