The origin of the name «Achuapa» is Nahuatl, from the words: “alt”, which means water; "achiote and apan" indicative of place, that is "Río de los achiotes". Although it could also be "Ashu: number four" and "Apa: stone", in the Matagalpa language, whose translation would be "Place of the four stones".

This meaning would make sense since this territory belonged to Las Segovias, before being assigned to the department of León.

The fundamental economic activity of the municipality is agriculture, the cultivation of basic grains, mainly rice and beans, highlights the cultivation of sesame, as well as livestock and beekeeping.

The municipality of Achuapa is located 210 kilometers from the city of Managua. It borders San Juan de Limay to the north, El Sauce to the south, Estelí to the east, and Villanueva to the west.

The municipality of Achuapa is located in the north of the department of León, in the so-called interior highlands; it is generally mountainous, and in the northeast is what is known as the Horno Grande mountain range, with elevations between 900 and 1,350 meters.

The predominant slopes are between 30 and 45%, which gives it strong agroforestry potential.

The main elevations that stand out are: to the north San Jerónimo de Bobadilla, Cerro La Zorra and El Roblito; to the south, La Mina and El Arrayán hills; to the east the Horno Grande mountain range, where the source of the Chiquito river is born and to the west the La Flor hill, El Jocote, Verde hill, Sulicayan, La Culebra and the El Chifle mountain range.

Another alternative is to visit the banks of the El Coyolar and Río Chiquito rivers, which together make up the Achuapita river. You can take walks to observe landscapes and birds, immerse yourself in the waters of these rivers to recreate or fish.

The municipality has a dry subtropical climate and the ecosystems observed are: pine forests, located in the highest parts and dominated by the species pinus oocarp. Dry transitional forest, in the middle and lower parts, where part of the species shed their leaves during the summer. Many of the livestock areas that are in disuse or in rest develop this ecosystem, although it lacks timber species or others that are no longer in the area.

The aquatic ecosystem and gallery forest are represented by the El Coyolar River and the Chiquito River; the surrounding forests have species characteristic of dry forest, but generally more developed, and some do not completely lose their leaves during the summer.

The agroforestry system is represented by perennial crops that utilize trees, including shade-grown coffee, avocado, papaya, and plantain. In the agricultural system, the topsoil in the municipality is not very deep; however, staple grain crops such as rice, corn, beans, and sesame are cultivated. Sorghum, soybeans, squash, cassava, pumpkin, taro, bell peppers, onions, tomatoes, sugarcane, and pineapple are also grown.

Also, within forest products, the production of honey stands out as a complementary activity of great value to the families of the municipality.

Pastures, both natural and improved for livestock grazing, are an important part of this ecosystem. These grazed areas have caused some soil degradation and depletion of the topsoil. Nevertheless, livestock farming is highly significant, with Achuapa standing out as a major producer of milk and dairy products. Among its derivatives, curd, cream, and cheese are particularly noteworthy and form an essential part of its productive and economic identity.

Representative flora species include pine, guácimo ternero, coralito, mora, carbón, cornizuelo, sacuanjoche, zapotillo, laurel, guanacaste negro, espadillo, jocote dulce, mango, sardinillo, oak, laurel negro, jiñocuabo, and carao.

The most predominant fauna species are: the ocelot, raccoon, bald-tailed fox, spiny fox, stink fox, agouti, paca, coati, peccary, armadillo, chachalaca, grackle, magpie, mockingbird, iguana, rattlesnake and river shrimp.

The pine tree is used for wood, and from the leaves and cones beautiful crafts are made such as containers, tableware, Christmas decorations, among others.

Culture

Achuapa, formerly called San José de Achuapa, was established as a town by law of March 15, 1870.

The municipality occupies the extreme north of the department of León, it is located in a mountainous area and in the western foothills of the Stylian mountains of Quiabuc, where they still preserve pine forests in their forests.

The house is named in honor of José Adán Hernández, a native of Achuapa, León, recognized as one of the greatest exponents of Nicaraguan folk music. Following his death in 2025, tributes were held in cultural spaces that bear his name, reaffirming his legacy as a symbol of cultural identity.

Artistic manifestations and International Artistic Festival

This event takes place during the second week of August and features national artists. Attendees can enjoy music, dance, theater, singing, agricultural and livestock exhibitions, and a craft market, culminating in a lively street party that lasts until dawn.

In music, the following group stands out: "The Rustics of the North" Composed of family members, this musical group is representative of Nicaraguan folk and popular music. It emerged around 2004, initially without a name, which was later given to them by a sound engineer during a performance. Its founder and main composer is Róger Antonio Osorio Pérez, originally from the community of Las Lajas, Achuapa.

The group performs a variety of genres: corridos, sones, polkas, mazurkas, and traditional folk music. Furthermore, they have gained national recognition, especially for their songs with social and patriotic themes, and are very popular at cultural and commemorative events.

Don José Adán Hernández Rocha He was one of the most important exponents of traditional Nicaraguan folk music. He is recognized as a cultural symbol of the north of the country and a leading figure in popular art. He was born on February 1, 1918, in the community of Las Lajas, Achuapa. He came from a humble family and worked in the fields from a young age, which limited his access to formal education. He passed away in January 2025 at the age of 106, leaving an invaluable legacy for Nicaraguan culture. He is the author of the famous polka "El grito del bolo" (The Cry of the Drunkard).", unmissable in the repertoires of Nicaraguan dance groups and ensembles.

Saint Sebastian Martyr

The patron saint festivities are celebrated in honor of Saint Sebastian Martyr; On January 8, the festivities begin with a happy party for the enjoyment, enjoyment and recreation of the population in general.

A novena is prayed starting on January 1st, with the special day being Saturday, the day of the bishop's arrival. On that day, the sacrament of Confirmation is administered to children and teenagers from both urban and rural areas. The celebrations culminate on Sunday with a solemn Mass and baptisms. People from all the rural communities of the municipality participate in the festivities, which last four days.

Other festivities that take place in this municipality are in honor of San José, on March 19; and the celebration of the Day of the Bible, which takes place on the fourth Sunday in September, with the reading of the Holy Bible for 24 hours. This event is organized by evangelical congregations.

Gastronomy

It is traditional to celebrate birthdays with Indian chicken soup, Achuapa-style nacatamales (larger) and the old Indian.
