The origin of the name Jinotega is derived from the words "xiocahuilt" which means jiñocuabo and "tecatl" which means inhabitant or neighbor, that is; city ​​of eternal men or of the eternal city.

It is known nationally as the City of Mists.

It is located in the north center of the country, at coordinates 13º05' north latitude and 86º00' west longitude and is 162 km away. from the capital Managua through the “old highway” to Matagalpa and 143 kms. along the “El Guayacán highway”.

It limits to the north with Santa María de Pantasma, to the south with Matagalpa and Sébaco, to the east with El Cuá and El Tuma-La Dalia, and to the west with La Trinidad and San Rafael del Norte.

The fundamental economic activity of the municipality is the agricultural sector and the cultivation of coffee, beans, corn and vegetables, which are benefited by its climate and type of soil.

The first impression upon arrival in Jinotega, also known as "the city of the mists" for its captivating cool climate, is the landscape of a beautiful valley surrounded by green mountains where the Chirinagua hill stands out and its imposing Peña de la Cruz, with a altitude of 1,300 meters above sea level, which offers a spectacular 180º view of the city and part of Lake Apanás. This place, pride of the Jinoteganos owes its tourist attraction to its nature, its history and its traditional culture.

If you are in Managua, you must board a collective transport unit at the El Mayoreo market bus terminal with a direct destination to the city. The bus trip will take two hours and thirty minutes and costs C$ 110.00. If your final destination is another of its municipalities, while in Jinotega you should go to the bus terminal of the Rigoberto López Pérez municipal market.

If you travel by private vehicle you must take the North Pan-American Highway in the direction of Matagalpa, at kilometer 120 before arriving in Matagalpa you will find the junction, you must take the road to the left and drive 24 more kms until you reach the city. The trip can take between two and two and a half hours depending on your speed and traffic.
