Due to the physical characteristics of its inhabitants, it is popularly called "The town of the cheles", since they are white-skinned and blue-eyed, very different from the other inhabitants of the region.
The municipality of San Fernando is located 248 kilometers from the city of Managua. It limits to the north with the Republic of Honduras, to the south with Ciudad Antigua, to the east with Jalapa and to the west with Mozonte.
The fundamental economic activity of the municipality is cattle ranching, the production of basic grains and the cultivation of coffee.
