The name of Limay is a toponymy of Nahuatl origin and means "River of Mud" or "The Butterflies".

According to ethnohistoric studies, they refer that the ethnic groups that settled in the Las Segovias region were the Matagalpas and Sumos, currently called

mayangnas, due to the characteristics of the material and immaterial culture that have been found in this region, especially pre-Hispanic ceramics.

The municipality of San Juan de Limay is located 195 kilometers from the city of Managua. It limits to the north with Pueblo Nuevo, Estelí and Condega, to the south with Achuapa, to the east with Estelí and west with the municipality of Cusmapa.

Sorghum cultivation

The main economic activity is the cultivation of basic grains (sorghum, beans and corn) and the production of limay stone and clay handicrafts. Livestock is an export product to Honduras, it is also marketed to other departments of Nicaragua. The curd of San Juan de Limay is one of the main dairy products that is distributed in the department of Estelí.

To get to San Juan de Limay, board a transport unit at the Mercado Mayoreo, in the city of Managua, heading to the Estelí bus terminal. Here you take the transport unit bound for San Juan de Limay on a route of 45 kilometers or you can do it in a private vehicle from Managua along the North Pan-American Highway, diverting through Sébaco to Estelí, then you go to San Juan de Limay.
