The origin of the name of the municipality is derived from the appearance of the image of San Marcos, in the place called Pilas de Sapasmapa.
The municipality of San Marcos is located 45 kilometers from the city of Managua. It limits to the north with La Concepción and El Crucero, to the south with Diriamba and Jinotepe, to the east with Masatepe and to the west with San Rafael del Sur.
The economic activity of the municipality is the agricultural one, having greater importance within the primary activity the agricultural sector; There are large areas or plantations dedicated to the cultivation of coffee, basic grains, citrus fruits, vegetables, among others.

How to reach?
The municipality of San Marcos can be reached by several roads that pass through its urban area. From Managua, heading along the Carretera Sur, from where you must turn at the Empalme de Las Esquinas towards the east.
You can also get there by the road that passes through Ticuantepe and La Concepción, taking a transport unit that leaves from the bus terminal in front of the Central American University, (UCA), or in the Israel Lewites and Roberto Huembes markets.
It is accessible from the department of Masaya, by the road that comes from Catarina and passes through the cities of Niquinohomo and Masatepe. There are buses and taxis from any of those cities.
