San Sebastián de Yalí is only called Yalí by his people. The word "Yale" means "Summit" in the Nahuatl language, a name that characterizes it very well because it is a town surrounded by towering heights. 

Entrance to the municipality

In 1908 it was named San Sebastián de Yalí in honor of San Sebastián because its inhabitants were and are very devoted to this image.

Its pine groves and coffee plantations stand out. It was the scene of General Augusto C. Sandino's fight against US intervention and a safe haven for Commander Germán Pomares Ordoñez in the fight against the Somoza dictatorship.

The San Sebastián de Yalí municipality is 203 km away. away from Managua, and 41 kms. of Jinotega, departmental head.

It limits to the north with Telpaneca, San Juan de Río Coco, Quilalí, to the south with La Concordia, to the east with Santa María de Pantasma and San Rafael del Norte and to the west with Estelí and Condega.

The main economic activity is traditional agriculture. It produces corn, coffee, beans, potatoes, tomatoes, coffee combined with plantains and bananas, which is the main source of income for the producing families. There are areas designated for livestock.

To get to San Sebastián de Yalí, from Managua, you must board a bus at the terminal of Mercado El Mayoreo in the direction of Jinotega. In this city, board a bus to San Rafael del Norte and there a bus that goes to Yalí. You can also take a bus from Managua to Estelí and from there in the COTRAN Norte, board a bus bound for Yalí.

If you go by private vehicle from the capital, you must take the North Pan-American Highway, towards Matagalpa until you reach the El Guayacán junction. Here you turn left and continue to the municipality of Jinotega; then continue on the road to San Rafael del Norte, following the signs and after passing this last municipality, you will travel approximately 17 km. until reaching San Sebastián de Yalí.

You can also get to San Sebastián de Yalí traveling through Estelí, in the latter you arrive at the monument of El Centenario popularly known as "La Pelota", there you turn right, then continue on the road towards La Concordia, passing this municipality you will arrive at the detour where the statue of Father Odorico D'Andrea is, turn left and follow the road towards San Sebastián de Yalí, passing through San Rafael del Norte.
