Somotillo is located to the north of the department of Chinandega, it is 201 kilometers from Managua, capital of Nicaragua and 67 from Chinandega.

It is located in a place that is very popular with foreign and national visitors, since it is a border area with Honduras.

One of the main characteristics is that its inhabitants depend on the services they offer to tourists and merchants who cross the border between Nicaragua and Honduras on a daily basis. The Guasaule is located five kilometers from Somotillo, through that route 80% of intra-regional trade transits, specifically that which comes from Panama, Costa Rica, Honduras and Nicaragua.

The town was founded at the confluence of the Río Negro and the Río Gallo, in the place that today is known as Pueblo Viejo, at the end of the XNUMXth century.

Its founders were a group of Jesuit priests who came to Somotillo to settle in Satoca to develop livestock, especially mules that were sold to travelers who moved from Guatemala or Comayagua to León, along the so-called royal road that passed through the center of Somotillo since the mid-seventeenth century.

In 1856, José María Estrada installed his government in Somotillo, and between June 21 and July 4, of the same year, the Guatemalan forces that came to help Nicaragua in its fight against William Walker, who were in command, camped there. of General Mariano Paredes.

It was elevated to a town by legislative agreement on September 4, 1873 and to a city on December 1, 1963.

It limits to the north with Santo Tomás, Cinco Pinos, San Francisco del Norte and the Republic of Honduras, to the south with Chinandega and Villanueva, to the east with Villanueva and San Francisco and to the west with the Puerto Morazán wetland area.

The main access road to the municipality is the Pan-American highway, which crosses the entire territory of Somotillo in a 10-kilometer stretch. The length of the primary communication pathways are: Managua – Chinandega, with 131 paved kilometers, Chinandega – Somotillo, is 67 kilometers and Somotillo – El Guasaule, five kilometers.

In its entirety, Somotillo is equipped with a road network made up of 18 kilometers of paved road, 10 on the international highway to El Guasaule and 120 kilometers on the highway to Cinco Pinos, it has 83 kilometers of all-weather roads and XNUMX of temporary roads. , with the exception of the wetlands area.

Being 88 kilometers of macadam secondary roads, 118 kilometers of tertiary roads built with ballast and natural earth, in urban areas 80% of the streets are paved.

A bus leaves Managua, arriving in Somotillo at 09:00 in the morning and leaves El Guasaule at 03:00 in the afternoon, arriving in Managua at 07:00 at night at the Israel Lewites Market.
