View of El Castillo

El Castillo is part of the Indio Maíz Biosphere Reserve. It is a municipality steeped in history, where the La Fortaleza de la Inmaculada Concepción de María Historical Monument is located. There lived the national heroine Rafaela Herrera, who went down in history for her act of bravery in defense against the English invaders.

The municipality of El Castillo inspired the poet Fernando Silva to make his novel El Comandante.

The fundamental economic activities of the municipality are tourism, livestock and agriculture, highlighting the crops of African palm, cocoa, beans and corn.

The municipality of El Castillo is located 350 kilometers from the city of Managua. It limits to the north with Bluefields, to the south with Costa Rica, to the east San Juan de Nicaragua and to the west with San Carlos.

To get to the municipality of El Castillo you must board a bus at the terminal of Mercado El Mayoreo in Managua bound for San Carlos, then take a boat to El Castillo, which leaves very frequently throughout the day.

If you travel by private vehicle you must take the Panamericana Norte highway towards San Carlos and then go to the place where the pangas leave towards El Castillo.
