The word Cua, comes from the Sumo Mayangnas language, "Kuah" which means turtle and Huas which means pipe or river; which literally reads: "River with turtles" or "Place of waters with turtles."
The municipality of El Cua is located 217 kilometers from the city of Managua.
It limits to the north with Wiwilí, to the south with Waslala, Rancho Grande and Jinotega, to the east with Waspam, Bonanza, Siuna and Waslala and to the west with the municipalities of Santa María de Pantasma and Wiwilí.
The fundamental economic activities of the municipality are beekeeping and agriculture, highlighting the cultivation of cocoa and coffee.

To get to the municipality of El Cua, you must take a bus to Matagalpa, at the collective transport terminal located in the El Mayoreo Market. Upon arrival in Matagalpa, board another bus bound for El Cua, 76 km from the departmental capital.
You can visit the municipality by private vehicle, taking the North Pan-American Highway towards Matagalpa, until you reach the El Tuma-La Dalia junction, and then turn towards El Cua.
You can also go to Jinotega, from there take the road to Pantasma, turn right in the community of Cuyalí and continue for approximately 70 kilometers until you reach El Cua.
