The name of the municipality has two versions, one is from the word of Nahuatl origin and means "Land of Tule", and the other refers to the name "San Juan de Tola", in honor of San Juan Bautista.

To get to the municipality of Tola you must board a collective transport unit at the bus terminal of Mercado Roberto Huembes, located in Managua, heading to the city of Rivas, then take a public transport with destination to Tola.

If you travel by private vehicle, take the Masaya-Rivas highway. At the entrance of the city of Rivas take the detour on the South Pan-American Highway, the signs are very punctual due to the hotel offer of the municipality, you will drive about 15 kilometers until you reach the municipality of Tola.
