The origin of the name «Achuapa» is Nahuatl, from the words: “alt”, which means water; "achiote and apan" indicative of place, that is "Río de los achiotes". Although it could also be "Ashu: number four" and "Apa: stone", in the Matagalpa language, whose translation would be "Place of the four stones".
This meaning would make sense since this territory belonged to Las Segovias, before being assigned to the department of León.
The fundamental economic activity of the municipality is agriculture, the cultivation of basic grains, mainly rice and beans, highlights the cultivation of sesame, as well as livestock and beekeeping.
The municipality of Achuapa is 210 kilometers from the city of Managua. It limits to the north with San Juan de Limay, to the south with El Sauce, to the east with Estelí and to the west with Villanueva.
The fundamental economic activity of the municipality is agricultural production and non-traditional basic grain crops such as sesame.

How to reach?
To get from Managua, to the municipality of Achuapa, you must board a transport unit at the bus terminal of the Casimiro Sotelo Montenegro National University, bound for the city of León, at its central bus terminal you board another transport unit heading to this municipality. You can also travel by private vehicle following the new highway to León.
