Santa María, has a rich and special cuisine based on corn, manifested in its typical foods that give flavor and color to the peaceful rural life with which the days of this town pass.
The high mountains that surround it, the cool climate and its landscapes invite you to discover and enjoy yourself immersed in your daily life. The municipality is located 274 kilometers from the city of Managua. It limits to the north and west with the Republic of Honduras, to the south with Somoto and to the east with Macuelizo.
The economy of Santa María is based on agriculture, cultivation of basic grains, corn and beans and coffee on a smaller scale. Sorghum, cassava, sugar cane and squash are grown. Extensions of land are dedicated to livestock.

How to reach?
To get from Managua to the municipality, you must board a bus to Ocotal at the Mercado El Mayoreo bus terminal, the trip takes approximately four hours, and the buses leave every hour.
Once in Ocotal, at the terminal, you must board a bus to Santa María, there are only two schedules available to the municipality: 12:15 m. and 01:15 pm The trip will take approximately three hours by public transport.
By private vehicle through the North Pan-American highway, you should go to the cities of Estelí and Ocotal, then take the highway to Macuelizo and finally to Santa María.
