The municipality of San Jorge is characterized by being a coastal plain on the banks of the Gran Cocibolca Lake.
The lake is a valuable and important natural resource that is used as a means of transportation to Isla de Ometepe, Cárdenas, Colón and other neighboring communities in the department of Rivas. It is also a resource for artisanal fishing and drinking water supply.
Average annual rainfall ranges between 1,400 and 1,500 meters, characterized by a good distribution throughout the year, the temperature varies between 26º and 27ºC, which together with its geographical position defines the climate as semi-humid.
The seasonal tropical dry forest is the type of ecosystem that predominates throughout the municipality. It comprises a great diversity of soils that have originated from volcanic materials, as well as alluvial lands and ancient sedimentary lands located along the coast of Lake Cocibolca.
The natural vegetation is found on the banks of the rivers, among the species of trees that exist are the helequeme, the ceibo, black hawthorn, chilamate, mangoes, pochote, among others, which serve as habitat for fauna.
Species of fauna can be observed that inhabit the proximity of the rivers where there are pockets of natural vegetation, among them we have the needle duck, watchmaker bird, piches, güises, magpies, orioles, beach duck, herons, rabbits, iguanas, garrobos, Congo monkey, white-faced monkey, bare-tailed fox, mión fox, garrobo, green iguana, anteater, pig duck, magpie, barranco, zenzontle, carrot, buzzard, swallow, widow and earwigs.
Four surface water streams run over the municipality, the Río de Oro, Río Obrajuelo, Río de Enmedio and Río Las Lajas, which are sites with ecological value because their mouths are nesting sites for aquatic birds, such as herons and ducks; as well as habitat for fish such as mojarra, guapote, tilapia, roncador and crabs.
