Eighty percent of the municipality belongs to the Bosawás Biosphere Reserve, which indicates that it is an important area for conservation. Of the six protected areas that make up the reserve, three of them include municipal lands.

These three reserves were recognized by the Man and the Biosphere Program (MAB-UNESCO) in October 1997; and ratified by the Government of Nicaragua in 2001.

The Bosawás Biosphere Reserve: The Central American lung, this site is ideal for a “Jungle Tour”. The journey to the Reserve starts from Boca de Ayapal by motor boat for 40 minutes, traveling to the Boca del Río Atabal, at this point you leave the boat and walk for 1.5 hours to the Hot Springs of Atapal.

Doing again a 40-minute tour over the Bocay river, you arrive in Wisuh to rest in a mountain lodge, then you pass through Yapulwás, from there you do a 40-minute walk until you reach the foot of Cerro Escondido where you will observe the variety of flora and fauna of the Reserve.

In the Farm Los Laureles You will learn about the cultivation of cocoa, an emblematic product in the municipality, observe the techniques of agricultural management, vermiculture and do activities such as horseback riding and milking, since the farm has cattle and horses. You can also visit the San Judas Estate, property of Mr. Víctor Tinoco. In this farm you can enjoy a pleasant rest and farm food under small huts. This farm offers you a spa on the Bocay River, swimming pool and lodging in cabins. It also offers other activities such as horseback riding, tilapia breeding observation and nature trails. The Macizo de Peñas Blancas Natural Reserve has an approximate extension of 11,800 hectares and the Cerro Kilambé Natural Reserve has an extension of 12,500 hectares, both were created by Presidential Decree No. 42-91 "Declaration of Protected Areas in hills, mountainous massifs, volcanoes and lagoons of the country ”, in 1991.

In the Cerro El Levay You will notice that two rocks are erected on a flat surface that gives the impression that they are in the air, defying the laws of gravity. On a mountain surrounded by mist and you can also observe flora and fauna, climb, go hiking, and enjoy the beautiful landscapes of the surroundings and the waterfall. To get to the site you have to cross the Bocay river and then go up and walk to the two stones in a time of approximately 45 minutes. The dam was built with the objective of taking advantage of existing resources and implementing the renewable energy system, promoting the protection and conservation of the environment. In this place you can take walks on the mountain trails, observe the fauna and panoramic views in the surroundings of the municipality. The dam in its lower part provides the conditions for a spa.
