The municipality of San José de Cusmapa is located in the south of the department of Madriz. It has an average height of 1,280 m asl, being the highest municipality in the country, which is why it is known as the Balcón de las Segovias.
Due to its location, the urban area is a complete viewpoint, from the Balcony of Cusmapa You can see a large part of the volcanic chain from the Pacific to the Gulf of Fonseca. You can also see a large number of pine trees and feel their smell and enjoy watching the birds that freely walk among the trees. "El Balcón Viewpoint" It is located in the highest area of the municipality of San José de Cusmapa, it can be reached on foot or by vehicle. The road is cobbled and in good condition. There is signage at the entrance to the site.
Another outstanding viewpoint is The Devil's Hand, a rock formation of almost 400 meters. squares, with an impressive landscape, you will also find on talpetate rock formations the carving of a hand (the hand of the devil) and other monoliths, you will also learn about the historical cultural relevance of this place, as it is said that it is known as a center indigenous ceremonial. It is located 500 meters south of San José de Cusmapa. To visit the place it is advisable to contact the municipal mayor to request information.
From the viewpoint The Oroquina Stone you can see the Mangas Verdes Reserve, where the pine forest and the cloud forest mix. In the pine forest, the Ocote pine predominates, the lower part is seasonal and is made up mainly of grasses, which makes this ecosystem prone to fires; the cloud forest is found in the highest areas, it is characterized by having a cool and humid climate, due to the influence of winds and clouds.
Here you will find a rock of about 100 meters. high, surrounded by pine, coal and quebracho forest, you can take a tour to the top of the viewpoint and observe the Maribios mountain range, the Gulf of Fonseca and the pine forests of San José de Cusmapa. It is located 3 kms. to the southeast of the urban area of San José de Cusmapa, the road is dirt.
El viewpoint of the Casa de Tambo or Wooden House, This house was built entirely of wood in 2001. From this place you will be able to appreciate part of the department of Chinandega and the Pacific Ocean. At that point you can breathe fresh air and see a large number of pines and birds that embellish the landscape. It is located in the urban area of San José de Cusmapa, from the Health Center 300 varas to the north.
La Tuma caveIt is an old water passage, which gives it a very curious shape, the surroundings are bordered by remnants of forest, where you can take excursion walks and observe nature.
El Tapacalí river It is another natural reference of the municipality, a water body that joins with the Comalí River in Honduras to give rise to the formation of the Coco or Segovia River, the main tributary of the famous Somoto Canyon.
La Lagunita is a reference site of the municipality, where you can take short walks and of course a bath in its cool waters.
La Reserve Green Sleeves It is an initiative to recover the pine forest, it is part of the Tepesomoto-La Patasta Protected Area, where you can enjoy the beauty of nature through excursions in the surroundings.
To get to this place it is necessary to contact a local guide and find out at the mayor's office. It can be reached on foot, on horseback or by vehicle, this place covers about 5 km² that extends around the urban part of Cusmapa, up to about 3 km. east of the municipality.
Quebrada and Ojo de Agua: This site is in a natural state, so visiting it is a complete adventure, you can enjoy the nature that surrounds it, take pictures and take the opportunity to take a bath in its cool waters. It is located in the El Ángel community, 4 kms. from the urban area. It can be reached on foot, by vehicle or by horse, the road is dirt.
Explore the El Arenal hill, shared with the municipality of San Juan de Limay. In this place you can be in direct contact with nature, making tours of the trails, observe the flora and fauna, take pictures, observe beautiful landscapes and enjoy the pleasant climate. It is located in the rural area, the road is dirt and is in good condition.
Garden of Don Gertrudis Mejía Sánchez: This site has an area of 20 blocks, in which the owner plants all kinds of vegetables, here you can learn about the process of planting and harvesting vegetables, fruit trees, coffee and beans, and in this place there are pines nearby high-rise. To get to the site you need to contact the owner. The orchard is located in the Los Llanitos community.
Among the representative fauna species the place stands out the white-tailed deer, garter belt, garrobo, green pichete, road runner, colipinto hummingbird and the carved woodpecker.
