The municipality of El Rosario is located in the southern Pacific region. Average annual rainfall ranges between 1,200 and 1,400 mm.

The topography of the area is rugged, with slopes of 15%. There are streams that cross the municipality and drain into Lake Cocibolca, it is 470 m above sea level.

In the agricultural system the representative items are coffee, sugar cane, basic grains, corn, beans, sugar, vegetables and fruit trees. The agroforestry system is represented by a production forest and perennial crops such as coffee.

The vegetation of the municipality is made up of woody trees such as laurel, strawberry tree, quebracho, jiñocuao, malinche, guanacaste, guapinol, royal cedar, helenque, tempate, chilamate, chiquirín, tigüilote, sacuanjoche and a great variety of ornamental and medicinal plants.

In the municipality there is a waste treatment plant, considered as a model for the treatment and management of garbage, here you can see the experimental rooms for the production of compost and humus, gardens and nurseries of ornamental, timber and fruit plants.

This site has an information room, where the garbage selection and handling process is explained, as well as its reuse to make fertilizers, among other things. The plant is located 1.5 kilometers from the urban area of ​​the municipality, in the Bertha Díaz community.
