The municipality of El Sauce is located north of the department of León, between the provinces of the Nicaraguan depression and the interior highlands. The topography is characterized by having medium elevation hills, high mountains, peaks, plateaus and wide and deep valleys.

Other places where natural features can be observed are the municipality's hydrographic network, represented mainly by the La Palma, Los Limones, Quebrada Seca and El Sauce rivers. Most only run during the winter and are tributaries of the El Portillo River. In these sites you can see a great diversity of birds and from time to time species of reptiles and small mammals.
The municipality is divided into two general zones; the high zone where the production of beans, coffee and pine conservation is located; and the lower zone dedicated to the cultivation of grains, cattle raising, honey and small-scale forestry. It is a landscape quite fragmented by human activities.
The ecosystems observed are: paddocks with pasturesIt is one of the most representative and is found in the lower and middle parts of the municipality. In these lands there are generally natural pastures and scattered trees. Very few use improved grasslands for cutting like Taiwan and Guate de Million.
Pine groves with oak They are limited in the highest part of the municipality, mostly ocote pine, oak and oak species are found. It is an important site for water retention and filtration.
The sub tropical dry forest it is characteristic of dry forest with the exception that at higher altitudes some species do not lose their foliage during the summer. The sites where these types of forests are found are in the middle and lower parts of the municipality, mainly in ravines and the upper part of some hills.
Gallery forests They are found on the banks of rivers and streams, mainly in the Los Limones river. Trees tend to be taller and some species do not shed their leaves during the summer.
In the agricultural area Annual crops of corn, beans, sorghum, linseed, chamomile, chilla, potato, cabbage and vegetables predominate.
Among the representative flora species of the place are the ocote pine, oak, oak, guanacaste, teak, strawberry tree, guapinol, eucalyptus, guácimo, cortez, tigüilote, panama, carao, papalón, matapalo, melero, jiñocuabo, brazil, blackberry, guayabilla, ceiba, neem, jocote, avocado, almond tree, güiligüiste, doll, quebracho, guarumo, talalate, tempisque, ojoche, chilamate, matasano, chaperno, sauce, nacascolo.
Among the species of fauna that predominate in the municipality are the congo monkeys, deer, Segovian squirrels, ostoche, guatusa, guardatinajas, porcupine, mión fox, pizote and raccoon. Among the birds, the swallow hawk, mealy parrot, white-fronted parrot and magpies stand out.
Part of the Meseta Tisey Nature Reserve - Salto La Estanzuela belongs to this municipality. The reserve is shared with the municipalities of Estelí and San Nicolás.
The ocote pine species is widely used in the municipality, either for wood or for the extraction of resin.
