Tisma Lagoon System Protected Area and Wildlife Refuge.

Almost the entire municipality is located a few meters above the level of Lake Nicaragua, which facilitates the encounter with natural landscapes surrounded by water.

The lagoon system includes the Tisma lagoon, Amapa lagoon, Panaloya estuary, Las Playuelas de Tisma and the marshy areas adjacent to the Tipitapa river.

One of the attractions of the area is bird watching, mainly during the rainy season, between the months of September and November, where both birds of species that reside in the tropics and migratory species that use the natural resources of the lagoon system are observed. for their food and shelter.

Due to the location and characteristics of the area, the flora and fauna of the municipality of Tisma are directly connected to the lagoon of the same name.

The most emblematic fauna are the aquatic birds, among which you can see herons and ducks that use the thicket of aquatic plants to take refuge and to find their food; as well as ospreys, hawks that fly over the lagoon looking for fish to feed on.

Fish such as mojarras and lagoon guapotes, in addition to being desired by the communities, are the base of the food chain for many of the aquatic birds found here. For this reason, the Sistema Lagunar de Tisma Protected Area and Wildlife Refuge, during the winter, is a natural laboratory where you can learn about the ecology of these species.La Laguna de Tisma is a natural reserve and a wetland of world importance recognized as a RAMSAR site. The large number of aquatic birds and migratory birds that take refuge in the suampos in the winter season turns this natural scene into a spectacle of nature.

This wetland system extends to the Panaloya plains, on the shore of Lake Nicaragua, where there is interactivity between bird species from other sites around the lake, thus maintaining connectivity of the lagoon with other wetland ecosystems. on the shores of Cocibolca.

Some species of fauna that are present in this municipality are the piche, gancho duck, gallinita de caites, white-winged doves and potrareñas doves, among others. The bijagua and the heliconia or platanillo are two species that are found in the Tisma Lagoon System Protected Area and Wildlife Refuge and that have been used by the inhabitants for many years. These are collected and taken to the markets where their leaves are used to pack food and serve traditional foods such as vigorón.
