Totogalpa is 20 kilometers from Somoto, the departmental capital, 89% of the territory is steep with slopes greater than 30% and is located in the region of El Cuje, Cayantu and Verapaz.
The rest of the territory has slopes between 2-30% and is located mainly in the Enoc Ortez, La Palmera, El Fraile, La Pita, San José, Caldera and Buena Vista de Santo Domingo valleys.
In the municipality there are three forms of mountainous depression: the Somoto plain, the Serranía de Madriz and Nueva Segovia.

Among the natural sites of reference in the municipality is the Witch of the Muta pool, a small natural lagoon located in the La Muta community, bordering between Yalagüina and Totogalpa. It is surrounded by small stone canyons, and according to the locals it contains a series of myths and legends.
El Rio Coco Geopark It covers the municipalities of Somoto, Totogalpa, San Lucas, Las Sabanas and San José de Cusmapa in the department of Madriz, comprising almost 1,000 square kilometers.
On July 7, 2020, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization UNESCO declared official the designation of the new Río Coco Geopark to the Global Network of Geoparks.
The El Fraile and El Duende caves They are famous for their pre-Columbian and colonial stories and myths. The cave of El Fraile, due to its characteristics, is supposed to have been a place for ritual sacrifices of human beings. Both caves are surrounded by secondary forest that is located below 900 m asl. They are located in the community of Sabana Grande, Ceiba de Oro, two kilometers to the north.
There are some hills where natural features are still preserved and from where beautiful landscapes are contemplated, among them is the Hill of the Cross. Another emblematic site is the Coco River, which serves as a boundary in a seven-kilometer stretch in the northwestern part with the municipality of Macuelizo. In the place known as Palmira it is used as a spa, from there you can visit the mounds and the orchid garden.
Other ravines that run mainly during the summer still have gallery forest, among them Quebrada Seca, Quebrada Sabana Grande, Quebrada Grande de Cuje, Quebrada de La Palamayca, Las Pozas, Macara, La Ceiba, El Caracol, Masis and La Ceiba.
In the La Ceiba community of Santo Domingo there are the Spanish bridges. Near Cerro Las Tres Señoritas there is an Indigenous Ceremonial Center and a natural viewpoint, in this territory the first ancestors settled, visit them in the San José community.

The representative fauna species are the hawk, blue pigeon, buzzard, white-winged pigeon, magpie, chachalaca, pijul, carrot, chorcha, thrush, guardabarranco, carpenter, orange-topped chocoyo, yellow-naped parakeet, wild hen, mountain owl, mattress, tarogón, thrush, white-tailed deer, bare-tailed fox, rabbit and wild cat.
In the El Cuje community, a group of artisan women are dedicated to the work of collecting pine cones and leaves with which they make ornaments and utilitarian pieces. The corn husk or leaf is used to make dolls, nativity scenes and pictures.
