In pre-Hispanic times, this municipality was part of the territory dominated by the Mangue-speaking Chorotegas. The first families of the current town were originally from Niquinohomo, Diriá and San Juan de Oriente.

The first families were López, Potosme, Nicoya and Salazar, they settled on the lands of Rafaela Herrera, in what was known as La Chompipa region, because it was made up of families who were dedicated to raising chompipes.

The name of La Paz is due to the fact that a peasant plowing the land came across an image of the Virgin, who when asked the priest said that it was Our Lady Queen of La Paz and that is why the inhabitants decided to name the municipality in 1896.

The town in 1858 mobilized families from neighboring farms to complete the urban population. In 1863 the condition of municipality was acquired and the permission of the authorities was obtained to be denominated with its current name: La Paz de Oriente.

Its current inhabitants are united, friendly and helpful people.
