It was declared a protected area by Presidential Decree 42-91 in the official newspaper La Gaceta No. 207 on November 4, 1991. It is distributed in the municipalities of La Cruz de Río Grande and Desembocadura de Río Grande. It has an area of ​​2,511 hectares that includes the intermediate fluvial marine plain between the Prinzapolka River and the Grande River; these plains are covered by sporadic pine shoots that have dispersed southward from the Miskito plain, disappearing into the wide swampy areas.

It has broadleaf forest, pine forests, mangroves and wetlands, which are in a good state of natural regeneration; highlighting forest species of commercial interest such as mahogany, male cedar, Santa María, María leche, guapinol, nancitón, medlar, granadillo, royal cedar, buzzard, coyote, jocotillo, tamarind and palo de agua.

Regarding the fauna, it is possible to find a great diversity of mammals such as the deer, mountain pig, sahino, tapir, keeper, squirrel, raccoon, single coattail, bunny, tiger; as well as birds, among which the plains parrots, green-capped and red-capped mountain parrots, chocoyos, pigeons, hawk, carrot, chachalaca, orupéndula, peacock bass, wild hen, limpets; reptiles such as the cuajipal, lizard, iguanas, freshwater turtles, and snakes.
