The first inhabitants who settled in this place were the Santos, Pineda, Martínez and Castillo families, who gave rise to the formation of this town, the exact date of its foundation is unknown, however in the town it is referenced that it dates from the time of the Spanish colony.

The first name of this municipality was “Pueblo de Obraje”. During the colony it was erected to "Villa Real de Potosí".

On December 24, 1811, the inhabitants of Potosí actively participated in the uprising movements against Spain, along with the town of Valle del Obraje, today known as Belén.

His scene of struggle was the Plaza de Rivas. Their fight was for the vindication of the freedom and independence of our peoples, managing to expel the Spanish authorities from the Villa de Rivas.

"La Rivense Candy Store”, By Mrs. Maritza Brenes, is the only one that keeps alive the tradition of sweets with a local flavor such as milk cartons, rose bread, marquesote, alfajores, coconut cups and piñonates.

Referential figures of local history and culture

Jose Laureano Pineda: outstanding character in the history of Nicaragua, for being the promoter of the designation of Managua as the capital of the Republic, with the intention of ending the struggles between León and Granada.

He was born in Potosí in 1802, studied Law, being elected director of the Supreme Court of Justice, and in 1851 appointed by the National Assembly, Supreme Director of the State.
