The Patron Saint of Masatepe is San Juan Bautista, but the town celebrates the Lord of Trinidad, represented by a beautiful life-size brunette image, more than 300 years old, finely carved in a single piece and that according to tradition was found by a indigenous of the Nimboja neighborhood named Trinidad, in types of the colony.

This festival takes place between May and June with religious ceremonies, colorful folk dances and the inevitable marimba and philharmonic music. The people pray and dance to the Lord of Trinidad.

Another religious festival is the one dedicated to San Jerónimo. On the last Sunday in October, the procession is accompanied by the popular agüizotes, the torovenado by Rodolfo Calero, folkloric dances by Inditas and the traditional Fish Dance.

With the patronal feast the bull stop is organized, the animals leave the Puerta del Cielo farm, located two kilometers from the Central Park, crossing the main streets of the city until they conclude at the barrier, where the mounted of Bulls.

Also the traditional "enramadas", adorned with flowers, fruits, palm trees and tree branches. These parties are animated by fireworks, marimba and philharmonic music or "chicheros"; and without missing the traditional horse parade, in honor of the Lord of Trinidad.

During the celebration, food is distributed, especially the casserole dough typical of these festivities, accompanied by its respective corn chicha.

The feast (40 days after Palm Sunday) of the Lord of Trinidad, also known as “Tincho”, is today one of the most colorful in Nicaragua, as it is considered a very miraculous invocation for many believers in Masatepe and the country, who year after year they pay promises and penances for the miracles received.

Religious tourism

Jews of Masatepe: This religious theater with more than 160 years of antiquity, maintained through the generations of promiseers, is presented during Holy Week, Thursday and Friday. This tradition is unique in Nicaragua for its promising Jews who take to the streets to “catch” Judas and then hang them symbolically in the trees of the Central Park.

During those days the streets of Masatepe are filled with much color and excitement, due to the colorful costumes worn by the promising Jews, as well as the masks and the squeaking of chains, when Judas is dragged through the streets.

15 days before Good Friday, the Pilgrim Carts depart from the San José region to the National Sanctuary of Jesús del Rescate in Rivas.
