The patron saint festivities of the Matagalpa municipality are in honor of the Virgen de la Merced, which is celebrated between September 15 and 24.
The devotion to its patron is crystallized in masses and processions and other religious activities and faithful from all over the department participate.
As is tradition, there is also a parade of floats with the candidates for queens, accompanied by an equestrian parade that runs through the main streets of the city.
In parallel to religious festivals, since 2012, the Nicaraguan Tourism Institute, Intur, has promoted the Festival of Polkas, Mazurcas and Jamaquellos, for two days with exhibition and sale of handicrafts, ornamental plants and native foods of the region.
Likewise, the Matagalpa Livestock Association and the Matagalpa Business Development Foundation institutionalized the Agricultural Fair.
Other holidays
Pilgrimage of the Divine Child: It takes place towards the Divino Niño Diocesan Sanctuary. Hike that takes place on the third Sunday of July each year to the Fuente Pura sector on the Matagalpa-Jinotega highway.
Procession of the Virgin of Guadalupe: It is held every December 12, the parishioners fulfill their promises by attending with huipil or traditional costumes, people of all ages attend this event carrying fruits and other offerings for the church. A tour of the main streets is made starting from the Hermitage of Guadalupe.
- Stations of the Cross and Day of the Cross: In the month of Lent and for May, Stations of the Cross are made towards the Mountain of Peace, making each of the stations from the Cathedral Church towards the mountain, thousands of parishioners attend.
- Saint Francis of Assisi Day: Held every October 04, there are kermes and processions for three days in Darío Park, an activity led by the Franciscan Friars.
Celebration of San José: every March 19 with parades, kermes, evenings and processions in the San José Church and Darío Park in the city.
