The municipality of San Fernando is located in the north center of the department of Nueva Segovia, it has an average elevation of 729 meters above sea level and elevations that range between 760 and 2,100 meters above sea level.
Part of the municipality of San Fernando is included in the Cordillera Dipilto Natural Reserve - Jalapa, which has many natural attractions, one of them is the presence of five micro-basins that form beautiful landscapes and where the water that supplies the population of the municipality is produced. There are also surprising landscapes of the pine and oak areas, the waterfalls that break on the rocky walls intertwining with the vegetation, there are emblematic species for conservation and very important experiences of conservation and community development.
The reserve has an extension of 31,315 hectares. The protected area includes part of the municipalities of Dipilto, Mozonte, San Fernando and Jalapa in the department of Nueva Segovia, and was declared a Natural Reserve through Decree 42-91 "Declaration of Various Hills, Mountain Massifs, Volcanoes and Lagoons of the Country".
Cerro Mogoton
The Salto San José. It is a free fall of 70 meters high that shows its crystal clear waters suitable for bathing, on the site, in addition, you will be able to observe the scenic beauty that surrounds this place and walk nature trails in the area. It is located within the Cordillera Dipilto – Jalapa Nature Reserve, 14 kilometers from the urban sector of the municipality, in the San José community.
El Santa Clara Falls. It is born in the river of the same name, here you can enjoy its waters suitable for bathing, hiking in the area, resting under the trees and enjoying a meal in the countryside. It is located a kilometer and a half north of the Santa Clara community.
Another natural attraction is the majestic Mogoton hill, the highest point in Nicaragua, and from where you can see magnificent landscapes.
Here you can do one of its two trails called El Familiar, which is easy to climb, and El Aventurero, in which you will practice rappelling. During your tour you will observe different birds such as the mockingbird, which is capable of singing 8 different songs, you can also take a break in a ravine and the natural pools of cold water that are found during the journey. Access the Mogotón hill through the community of Achuapa, in the municipality of San Fernando). This hill is shared with Mozonte.
San Nicolás Forest Farm. Model farm for its preservation and proper care of the environment. It received the recognition of Best Forest Management at the national level. It has a research and genetic improvement field, which allows studies to be carried out and visitors can learn about this subject, in addition to walking the trails through the pine forests and visiting the arboretum.
Another of the important natural sites are Don Alfonso Hot Springs, also known as Aguas Termales de Aranjuez or Aguas Termales Muyuca, which are located on the border of the municipalities of El Jícaro, Jalapa and San Fernando. On the site you will find granite rocks, marble gemstones and a mound of natural granite rock, the one with a slope from which filtered water comes out in fountain style. You can take a relaxing bath in its pools, which are regulated at temperatures to suit the client. They also have a special pool for use by people with disabilities and an outdoor sauna. It is located in the rural sector, approximately 2 kilometers from the Aranjuez community.

Visit the Gregorio Blandino Multisectoral Cooperative, which has 33 years of existence. Here you can learn about its history and tour its immense lands through different tours; such as the vegetable tour, the chia production tour, and the artificial lagoon tour.
Also, you can climb El Duende hill, located within their property, learn how to make organic fertilizer and taste the products that are grown in the area. In this cooperative you can also visit the tilapia farming piles and learn about this process. It is located in the Santa Rosa community, easily accessible by any means of transportation.
El hydrographic system of the municipality of San Fernando constitutes some important sites for the conservation of the pine forest, gallery forest and the conservation of the flora and fauna of the place. Among the most important water sources are: the Achuapa River, Salamají, San Fernando, Alalí, Santa Clara, San Nicolás, La Leona, Orosí, Quebrada Grande, La Horca and Musulí.
El open and closed pine forest It is conserved mainly in the area of the Dipilto Jalapa mountain range and which belongs to the municipality. In some sectors the ecosystem is closed, where the pines are more preserved and are associated with other species of pine and shrubs. In the places where the ecosystem is open is where the extraction of wood takes place and where more fires occur.
In agroforestry systems the coffee crop excels, also the crops of bananas, plantains, and bananas; and citrus fruits such as oranges and lemons. There are also coconuts, mangoes and avocados. in the agricultural system the main crops with cassava, taro, tomato, sugar cane and chiltoma.
In the livestock system, the municipality's livestock is mostly intended for milk production, being an extensive and traditional livestock, where native grasses and herbs are generally used.
Among the species of fauna Representative examples include the spider monkey, howler monkey, puma, jaguar, anteater, tapir, peccary, mountain pig, chestnut-chested warbler, quetzal, dwarf hermit, stone-paved woodpecker, goldfinch, blue-fronted amazilia, striped-tailed hummingbird, green-breasted mountaineer, brown mockingbird , parrot, lizard, fox, coyote, agoutis, deer and pichets.
