It is located in the central region between the municipalities of Camoapa, Comalapa, San Francisco de Cuapa, Juigalpa, La Libertad, and San Pedro de Lóvago, in the department of Chontales. It has an area of ​​19,194 hectares. It was declared through Decree 42-91, published in La Gaceta on November 4, 1991. This reserve represents for all Chontaleños an area where the tribes that gave rise to a great majority of peoples lived for a long time.

The Amerrisque protected area is a massif of great importance, since the basins of the Mayales, Murra and Mico rivers are born from here; therefore its protection is vital, to maintain the water resource and supply of drinking water to the populations of the municipalities of Comalapa, Cuapa and Juigalpa, and in the future La Libertad and Camoapa.

The premontane type of forest is presented that does not exceed 1000 meters above sea level and deciduous with vegetation. The life zone is of the type of tropical dry and sub tropical forest in the highest parts. It is of the low and clear forest type of broadleaf, deciduous and evergreen. Among the species are included from only regional ones such as the arbutus, espavel, chilamate, oak, sweetgum, terebinth, eucalyptus, mahogany, and rosewood.

The fauna is represented by coyotes, ocelots, deer, guatusas, tapirs, anteaters, armadillos; gullies, toucans, harpy eagles, eagle owls, roadrunners; rattlesnakes, corals and velvets.
