It has an area of 17,950 hectares. It comprises 4 relatively large islands, which are Macarrón, Macarroncito, San Fernando and La Venada, which are surrounded by numerous very rocky islets; likewise within its limits approximately 1 kilometer of adjacent waters of the archipelago.
In the area the presence of 9 mammals, 4 amphibians, 14 reptiles is registered; highlighting the population of Alligators largest in Nicaragua.
