Serranía Tepesomoto-La Patasta

It is located in the central-north region between the municipalities of San Lucas, Somoto and Las Sabanas in the department of Madriz and the municipalities of Pueblo Nuevo and San Juan de Limay in the department of Estelí. It has an area of ​​10,069 hectares. The area was declared through Decree 42-91, published in La Gaceta on November 4, 1991.

It is one of the most valuable protected areas in the country in terms of flora and fauna, as well as for its landscapes and natural attractions, among which lagoons, rivers and waterfalls stand out. It presents broadleaf forest and oak and pine forest, turning it into a mountain of mist-jungle with agricultural areas intervened with different varieties of orchids, ferns and high mountain trees. The reserve is located on ridges south of the city of Somoto, with altitudes of up to 1700m.
