This town was originally inhabited by the Chorotega ethnic group, land of the chief Tipitapa and was part of the old population of Managua. Tipitapa was founded in 1755 with the name of "San José de Tipitapa", and in 1961 elevated to a city.

The municipality is linked to two historical events of great relevance and of national and Latin American interest: the heroic Battle of San Jacinto, on September 14, 1856, a feat that marked a milestone in our history and in our national sovereignty; and the signing of the Black Hawthorn Pact in 1927, an event that led to the founding of the Defense Army of National Sovereignty by the General of Free Men and Women, Augusto C. Sandino.

Lord of EsquipulasThe small image was brought to the temple possibly two years before the other image that had been ordered to make arrived from Guatemala and from that time it was venerated by the population with great faith and devotion. Many miracles are attributed to the image of the Black Christ of Esquipulas.

Legend of the Devil's Bridge. The myth of the Devil's Bridge was born when the eye of the thermal spring was built, which emanated quantities of gases with the smell of sulfur and this invited the ancestral settlers to make a pact with the Devil.

There is also a legend about the bridge built over the Tipitapa River, at the end of the XNUMXth century. According to what they say, on a huge rock on the banks of the river the Apostle Santiago fought a tenacious battle against the Devil himself, whom he managed to defeat. The stone was baptized as the Rock of Santiago and for many years it became a pilgrimage site; this place is a very important historical and cultural landmark of the local culture.
