Artistic expressions and manifestations
Many communities annually celebrate their festivals with traditions typical of their culture in memory of their ancestors; in these festivities music and dances stand out. There are special dances dedicated to the well-being of the communities, including the dance of the harvest.
Miskito communities also celebrate Christmas and the New Year.
The "Walpa" dance and music group stands out, participating in cultural and religious events in their municipality, as well as the young singer Paulino Ingram known as "Wangky Buay" who participated at the national level in a singing contest with Miskito music, singer Leo Dube French, Shorly French, Dionisio Melgara's group, among others.
In religious celebrations the guitar and the accordion prevail, as well as the use of original instruments, such as the kumbi or drum (drum made of tree bark and deer hide), the kumbí (drum lined on one side only), the shell timbale of turtle, the maraca of seeds, the jaw of a donkey or horse, the grater and the lunku (harp). The oldest dances were danced to the rhythm of the kumbí.
In traditional and popular music, the following stand out: Sirpiki mairin, Usus mairin and Tininiska.
Traditional trades
Extensive migratory agriculture is practiced. Construction of houses, pipes (rustic canoe-type boats) and bridges.
The güirisería, is an activity that contributes to the family economy, is carried out by different communities. An estimated 2,400 people are dedicated to güirisería; those with the most experience are those from the community of San Carlos. The gold mined is sold to Honduran and Nicaraguan merchants.
Artisanal fishing, all rural communities practice artisanal fishing in lagoons and rivers, for self-consumption, in small quantities, commercialization is local. The inhabitants of Cabo Viejo and Bismuna are mainly engaged in fishing for seafood that they sell to Honduran and Colombian boats.
Cabinetmaking is also another traditional trade that occurs a lot in the municipality, there are around six workshops that manufacture furniture for the home. There are also some bakeries for local consumption.
Another of the ancestral trades that predominates is the use of the knowledge and knowledge of traditional medicine; there are more than 54 midwives, there are naturopathic doctors (healers, sukia) who practice yamni kaikan (see luck), sika lan (knowledge of natural medicine), grande nani (midwives) and sobadores.
Crafts
Vegetable fiber: crafts of tuno, Kahmi such as macramé, weaving hammocks, dresses, jackets, highlights the artisan Margarita Flores.
Coconut and bamboo handicrafts such as furniture and carvings. The artisan James stands out in the Buenos Aires neighborhood, next to the Rubén Sujo winery.
Goldsmith: gold and silver jewelry in black coral (rings, earrings, bracelets, necklaces) jewelry made of quartz, gold, pink and brown pearls, malachite, tortoiseshell (tortoise shell), red coral, sea snails, mother-of-pearl shell, beef bone, of shark and rose wood, you can look for the artisan Larry Ramírez, in front of Hospedaje Vanesa.
They also make pine leaf crafts (baskets and hats).
Julio Pantin Guitar Workshop: They make musical instruments, violin, requinto and strings.
Elaboration of chinchorro, this is a resource used in artisanal fishing. It is used in different ways to catch fish.
Legends
They include: Niki niki, liwa mairin, ulak, duende and kayrasa.
Other sites of historical and cultural interest
Auka Tangni Museum: (Flor de Cortés), was founded in 2003. During the visit to the museum you will be able to recognize the history and identity of this culture through the objects that are exposed and that were used by the ancestors such as: grinding stones, hunting weapons and fish, kitchen objects, a net to fish in the lagoons, hammocks and ropes made with materials from the region, percussion instruments and photographs.
Ecological farm Pasa Painkira: near the community of Kururia, which produces Koko Latka (coconut oil). Path of trees, educational games of awareness for nature is offered to the visitor. Country spa: where you can enjoy the fresh waters of the site, taste the local cuisine, recreate and enjoy a pleasant environment, ideal for visiting with the family, it is located in the urban area of the municipality.
Kiahras Community: Historical vestiges of the cannons that the Miskitu kings used to defend themselves against corsairs, pirates and indigenous and Spanish invaders are preserved.
Miguel Bikan Community: Waspam - Puerto Cabezas highway, entrance to Santa Clara, 38 kilometers south west of Waspam, offers a three-dimensional map of the community with a miniature reproduction of the community's surface with all the resources.
Bawisa Farm: ceremonial center of indigenous spirituality. Located in an area of humid tropical forest where it connects with the pine savanna and the source of the Likus River.
