Wiwilí is a word of Miskito origin and means “Zompopo of water”. The first town was founded in 1920; constituted by the married couple Eduardo Palma and Bárbara de Palma, and Mr. Clemente Calderón; who settled on the banks of the Coco River; later it was populated with immigrants from other territories of the country who came in search of work in the logging and rubber companies and the gold and silver mines.

The town of Wiwilí de Nueva Segovia was established as a municipality in 1970, becoming the youngest municipality in the region.

One of the important cultural characteristics of this municipality is that it is multilingual and multi-ethnic. In the northern part of the municipality are the communities of Miskito and Mayangnas origin; in the central and southern part it is inhabited by people of mestizo origin.

A relevant fact of this municipality, for which it is known worldwide, is that in 1933 the National Hero, General Augusto C. Sandino, founded the first agricultural cooperative called "Cooperativa Río Coco"; formed by demobilized peasants from its small Army for the Defense of the National Sovereignty of Nicaragua, EDSN, but great in its ideals, courage and revolutionary convictions.

In 1960, they arrived in Wiwilí from Nueva Segovia early merchants: Nemesio Vallecillo, Pancho Merlo, Concepción Castro, Domingo Pinell, Adolfo Pinell, and Arnulfo Noguera, among others, who brought the products on the back of a mule from the city of Jinotega, since at that time there were no roads.

Among the personalities that crossed in her boat, the president of Nicaragua, Commander Daniel Ortega and Jaime Wheelock, stand out in the 80s. In addition, she was one of the founders of the municipality and the boatmen of the Coco River.

The best known are Don Jaime's Workshop, in the Marta Quezada neighborhood; the Isabel Herrera workshop and the Hipa Workshop. All are located in the urban area of ​​the city.

At Polanco Horseshoes Workshop They work everything related to blacksmithing, they make products typical of field activities such as horse shoes, pickaxes, hoe, coba, fences, and gates. They also repair and sharpen these types of tools. It is located next to the Delia Rosa Casco Rojas Institute.
