The municipality of San Fernando was originally inhabited by indigenous groups from pre-Hispanic times; This is evidenced by the countless toponymies that exist in this territory; among which the Macaljí river, Solonlí river, Musulí river and the Salamají valley stand out, the latter a small hamlet. Salamaji means "Water sources", alluding to the waters that descend towards the valley, from the Dipilto mountain range.

Years later the town of colonial origin was founded and the first founders were the Herrera and Ortez families; surnames that are still predominant and traditional in this municipality; who are of Spanish descent. This town was elevated to a municipality in 1897.

One of the anthropological characteristics of San Fernando is the union of matrimonial kinship; a way to preserve the lineage of the founding families of the town; aspect that manifests itself in the physical phenotypic traits of its inhabitants; standing out clear eyes and white complexion, for which it is known as "The town of the cheles”.

In 1926 General Augusto C. Sandino held the first armed encounter in San Fernando, with his small army, but great in bravery, courage and dignity. From here he left for Puerto Cabezas. In San Fernando part of Sandino's high command was established, including General Rufo Marín, the second in command, who died in the bombing of the city of Ocotal in 1927 by the Yankee marines, defending the decorum and dignity of our country. .
