In 2002 it was named a municipality, by legislative decree the Cua-Bocay municipality was divided into two: El Cua and San José de Bocay.

San Jose de Bocay

Blessed with a lot of culture, natural beauties and humble people who keep their customs and traditions characteristic of the ethnic groups that inhabit the area, which endures over the years.

The municipality of San José de Bocay is located 238.7 kilometers from the city of Managua. It limits to the north with Wiwilí and the Republic of Honduras, to the south with Waslala, Rancho Grande and Jinotega, to the east with Waspam, Bonanza, Siuna and Waslala, and to the west with Santa María de Pantasma and Wiwilí.

The fundamental economic activity of the municipality is agriculture, mainly basic grains and coffee. Commerce occupies a place of great importance in the economy of the municipality, especially the commercialization of handicrafts.

To get to San José de Bocay you must board the bus from Mercado El Mayoreo, in Managua to Matagalpa, then take a taxi to COTRAN Sur and board the bus that goes directly to San José de Bocay. This route is the fastest by collective bus. From Matagalpa to San José de Bocay there are 108.5 kilometers away.

You can also travel by private vehicle heading along the North Pan-American Highway, heading for Jinotega, turning off in Matagalpa towards the municipality of San José de Bocay. The duration of the tour is approximately five hours.
