The population of Catarina comes from families descended from the Dirianes, a group of the Chorotega ethnic group who settled in this region.

Although its indigenous name is not clear, historical data reveals that this town belonged to an indigenous confederation called Namotiva, which in the Nahuatl language means "brothers or neighbors", along with its neighbors San Juan de Oriente, Niquinohomo and Nandasmo.
