Its original name was San Nicolás de Canta Rana, because according to oral history it was called Canta Rana because the site was a swamp where there were many frogs that every night offered great concerts with their melodious croaks.

The municipality of San Nicolás de Oriente is located in the south of the Estelí department, 25 kilometers from the departmental capital and 148 from Managua.

The main access road of the municipality is a 13-kilometer long road and begins on the North Pan-American Highway on the Managua-Estelí route, which reaches the municipal seat.

It limits to the north with the municipality of Estelí, to the south with Santa Rosa del Peñón, to the east with La Trinidad and San Isidro and to the west with El Sauce.

Agriculture is the main economic activity in this municipality. Beans, corn, sorghum, potatoes, cabbage, chilla, linseed and chamomile are grown here. Livestock is carried out on a smaller scale mainly for local consumption and commercialization with neighboring areas.

To get to San Nicolás you can board a transport unit at the Mercado Mayoreo bus terminal bound for Estelí. At the Estelí terminal you take a bus to San Nicolás.

You can also travel by vehicle from Managua, taking the North Pan-American Highway towards Estelí. At kilometer 135, you will find the Santa Cruz junction, you will turn west and after passing through the Cerro Tomaba Natural Reserve, on a 13-kilometer route, you will reach the municipal seat.
